History shapes my fiction

When I sit down to write, I never start from a blank slate. Echoes of real people surround me—people who lived, suffered, hoped, and made impossible choices long before I put a single word on the page.

To me, history is not a static setting. Instead, it forms a living current underneath every story I tell.

Bringing History to Life

Many of my books root themselves in real events and individuals. I view fiction not as an escape from reality, but as a path toward it.

While history books provide facts, stories help us feel those events. When writing a novel, I study letters, court records, news reports, and eyewitness accounts.

These small details—how light fell in a courtroom, how a town smelled after rain, or what someone ate for breakfast—anchor every story in truth.

The Bridge Between History and Fiction

However, I am not writing textbooks; I am writing human stories. Consequently, I must imagine what archives leave out:

  • Unwritten conversations
  • Doubts that people kept quiet
  • Private prayers that never made it into historical records

Here, the line between history and fiction becomes a bridge. Rather than changing what happened, I explore how it felt to live through those moments.

The Responsibility of the Writer

Writing historical fiction carries real responsibility. When I feature a real culture or a moment of suffering, I approach the subject with humility.

I strive to honor past truths while meeting current readers’ needs. Therefore, I continually ask myself crucial questions:

  • Am I oversimplifying complex events?
  • Am I romanticizing brutal realities?
  • Am I offering full human dignity, or turning a person into a mere symbol?

Why Historical Fiction Matters

Ultimately, I write historical fiction to transform myself and my readers.

Stepping into another era reminds us that people in the past closely resembled us. They loved their families, harbored secret fears, and occasionally found courage at great personal cost.

If my novels help readers discover that same capacity for courage and compassion, history achieves its purpose.
